Masterclass 'Bringing lymphology into holistic lymphoedema management'

Objective measuring to optimize outcomes for patients and practitioners

Course number: 1202921

The next course isn't scheduled yet

Course description
The following topics will be presented during this masterclass:
1) Differential diagnosis between lymphoedemas, lipoedemas, venous oedemas and mixtures of these.
2) To measure or not to measure? What, when and where?
3) Objective versus subjective – looking for complementarity.
4) Using existing data from other sources then the patients bring with them.
5) Measuring the condition at presentation. What you need for a baseline; what is essential, what is optional? Structural measures, functional measures.
6) Measuring the effect of your interventions.
7) Using measurement to optimize outcomes.
8) Knowing when things are not working – which measurement is important?
9) Using objective measurements as the basis of your publications – ensuring reliability and repeatability.
10) The future of our measurement.
11) Balancing measurement need versus necessity in a busy clinic.

Learning outcomes
As a consequence of attending this masterclass it is expected that attendees will:
- Be better able to undertake a differential diagnosis between lymphoedemas, lipoedemas, venous oedemas and mixtures of these.
- Be more aware of options (such as bio-impedance spectroscopy) for the early detection of latent and subclinical stages of lymphoedema.
- Be better able to measure the progress of lymphoedema (and associated syndromes) through the use of tonometry, BIS, perometry and other tools.
- Be better able to measure and respond to risk factors associated with lymphoedema and the effect of their remdiation.
- Be more aware of what measures you as a professional can make and what measures others can make for you to gain better outcomes.
- Be better able to link measures of lymphatic sytem functional status with objective and subjective symptoms and compositional and structual indications of this functional change.
- Gain better patient outcomes through accurate measurement of treatment and management effects.
- Be more confident in the application of knowledge gained through appropriate measurement towards publication of case studies and small scale trials.
- Be more confident in patient recommendations through the collection of simple but high quality structural and functional information.
- Be more successful in gaining acceptance of your work in learned journals such as the Journal of Lymphoedema, Lymphology etc.
