SPIFFER: The dimensions of motion and our potential for change
Become a better movement detective
SPIFFER identifies seven fundamental and interrelated ways that we observe and experience movement: Sequence: the chain of motion through the skeleton. Path: the line of motion through three-dimensional space. Initiation: where the movement begins. Foundation: how weight is distributed over the base of support. Flow: tempo including speed, acceleration and the attitude toward time and control. Effort: patterns of muscular action and the experience of exertion. Respiration: the rhythms and dimensions of breathing.
The model details the inner aspects of each dimension of motion, spelling out how the dimensions interrelate and even identifying where they can be independent (and why this can be critical for learning). Based on insights from kinesiology, applied cybernetics, somatic practices, and the moving arts, SPIFFER proposes a systemic and systematic roadmap for seeing, understanding and effectively communicating about human actions and abilities.
This course utilizes the full pedagogical spectrum from lecture and small group exercises to experiential movement sessions (Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons) and discussions. Participants learn what visual and haptic questions count, discover how to find the answers, determine the options they afford, and discern consequences they imply. The process of learning this model is also a process of learning about oneself: finding out what you already notice – what you cannot help but notice – and discovering what you had not noticed that you were not noticing.
Become a better movement teacher
Understanding how people move means understanding the both biomechanical basis of motion and the neuromuscular coordination of action. Besides denoting how others move; the SPIFFER also maps the spectrum of sensations that form the neurological basis for experiencing oneself in motion. By clarifying the perceptual dimensions of motion, SPIFFER makes it possible to: – Comprehend movement from anatomical, spatial, gravitational, and temporal perspectives. – Identify perceptual preferences and sensory blind spots. – Better understand your patients and how they learn. – Give more effective movement cues and clearer instructions. – Learn simple, effective pedagogical strategies. – Develop greater flexibility, joy, and creativity in teaching.
SPIFFER links the gamut of kinesthetic perception to the continuum of human skill, suggesting new ways to understand how we move, elicit our innate potential to learn to move and develop ever deepening sensory-motor competence.
Educational goal SPIFFER offers a learnable, pragmatic framework for seeing and understanding the fundamental dimensions of motion. The SPIFFER model is designed to: 1) Improve movement observation and analysis. 2) Cultivate new pedagogical approaches that foster collaborative learning. 3) Understand the potential for effective, efficient action from a systemic perspective.
